It's 1962 in a small American town. Curt (Richard Dreyfuss) and Steve (Ron Howard) each are about to leave home for college, but are uncertain about their future. Curt begins a reckless adventure, seeking out a beautiful woman in a white Thunderbird (Suzanne Somers), and eventually finds trouble when he runs into a local gang. Meanwhile, Steve hurts his girlfriend (Cindy Williams) when he suggests that they date other people while they're apart, but has a change of heart and tries to make amends. Two other friends from the same school have their own misadventures the same night. Toad (Charlie Martin Smith) is a geeky car fanatic who clumsily tries to impress his girlfriend (Candy Clark). John (Paul Le Mat) is a rebellious dropout who gets stuck with a young girl named Carol (Mackenzie Phillips), as Bob Falfa (Harrison Ford) challenges him to a drag race, where all the stories will converge in a gripping climax.
